The number of people killed in road accidents in southern Binh Duong province during the first three months of this year increased by 35 to 92, an annual rise of 61.4 percent.

A total of 608 crashes took place injuring 717 people. Overall, there was a 4.7 percent reduction in the number of accidents. However, early 2015 accidents tended to be more severe and the ratio of fatal incidents grew substantially, according to provincial Transportation Department Director Le Van Rum.

A disregard for safety regulations, large numbers of tourists and expanding volume of transiting traffic are considered the main culprits of the issue, said the local road safety committee.

Binh Duong needs to promptly address overload transportation at quarries and warehouses together with the implementation of intensive awareness-raising campaigns, urged Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Traffic Safety Committee Khuat Viet Hung.-VNA
