(VOV) – The SEA Games football draw took place on the afternoon of April 15 in Singapore and Vietnam has been drawn alongside Thailand and Malaysia in Group B as well as Laos, Brunei and Timor Leste.
The remaining five of the eleven Southeast Asian teams – Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Philippines – are in Group A.
“Vietnam has been drawn into Group B alongside Thailand and Malaysia,” said striker Mac Hong Quan adding that it is indeed a challenging group but the team should not be daunted by the task ahead.
Quan said it is not the easiest of groups but we should be ready to face whichever team comes along. I feel that we should believe in our own team and prepare ourselves for the tournament. That is the most important thing of all.
For myself, I will go into the tournament wanting to give it my all. This is a major tournament for Vietnam and I feel that we have been preparing well enough and it is now time to focus and show what we can do on the pitch.
The tentative date for kick-off has been pegged for 29 May – a week before the official opening ceremony – with matches to be played at the Jalan Besar Stadium and also the Bishan Stadium.
Play will be in a round robin format with the top two winning teams in each group moving on to the semi-finals.
Thailand, seeded no 1, are the defending champions with Singapore seeded in the number 2 spot.
