There were 96 residential areas in districts 6, 11, Tan Binh and Tan Phu living along the heavily-polluted Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal stretching nearly eight kilometers. Over 470,000 households and 15,000 enterprises discharged untreated wastewater directly into the canal.
Work started four years ago on a US$150-million project funded by the World Bank to rehabilitate the living environment of the residential areas in the canal basin. The project installed over three kilometers of drainage systems from Tan Phu District to District 11, dredged nearly 7.5 kilometers of canal and built over 12 kilometers of road.
According to environment experts, together with the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal which has also been rehabilitated, the Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal rehabilitation project will make the streets linking districts 5, 6, 11, Tan Binh and Tan Phu wider and more beautiful.
